Strawberries are one of the most widely eaten berries worldwide, and a genuinely accessible year-round option (fresh in season, frozen the rest of the year) with a research profile that holds up well against pricier "exotic" berries.

The science

Strawberries are a strong dietary source of vitamin C and ellagic acid, a polyphenol studied for antioxidant activity, alongside the anthocyanins responsible for their red colour. Cohort studies looking at regular berry consumption have found associations with favourable cardiovascular and metabolic markers, and strawberries specifically have been studied for effects on post-meal blood sugar response when eaten alongside higher-carbohydrate meals.

A genuinely low-sugar fruit choice
