Organic vs. conventional produce

A genuinely mixed picture on nutrients, a clearer one on pesticides, and a practical bottom line either way.

The nutrient question

Research comparing nutrient content between organic and conventional produce has produced mixed results — some studies find modestly higher levels of certain antioxidants and polyphenols in organic produce, while comprehensive reviews have generally found the overall evidence for a meaningful nutritional advantage inconclusive.

The pesticide question is more clear-cut

Organic produce reliably carries lower pesticide residue levels than conventional produce — this part of the comparison is well established. What's less clear is the health significance of that difference, since conventional produce residues in most studied populations remain within established safety limits set by regulatory bodies.

A practical, budget-aware framing

If organic fits your budget, lower pesticide exposure and (possibly) modestly higher polyphenol content are reasonable, if unproven-at-scale, potential upsides. If it doesn't, eating more vegetables and fruit of any kind — conventional included — remains far more consistently supported for lowering inflammatory load than the organic-vs-conventional question itself.

Don't let this become a barrier: the choice between conventional vegetables and no vegetables isn't close — eat the produce you can access and afford.
