Matthew Walker is a sleep scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley, where he directs the Center for Human Sleep Science. His 2017 book Why We Sleep brought sleep research to a mainstream audience in a way few academic books manage, and he continues to publish peer-reviewed research alongside his public communication work.

Why We Sleep has faced public criticism over a small number of specific statistical claims and citations in its first edition — worth knowing as context. This doesn't undermine the broader scientific consensus on sleep's importance to immune, metabolic and cognitive health, which remains strong and is supported by a much wider body of research than any single book.

Walker is a strong advocate for prioritising sleep on par with diet and exercise in health conversations — a position now widely shared across the research community, even if the exact numbers in any single popular book deserve the same scrutiny we'd apply to any other single source.
