What it is

Oranges are one of the most recognisable and widely available fruits globally — genuinely ordinary, genuinely cheap in most places, and carrying a research profile that's easy to overlook precisely because it's so familiar.

The science

Beyond their well-known vitamin C content, oranges are a major dietary source of hesperidin, a flavonoid concentrated particularly in the white pith and membranes most people discard — research on hesperidin has explored anti-inflammatory and vascular effects, generally at intakes higher than typical casual orange consumption.

Whole fruit vs. juice — a bigger gap than usual

This is one food where the whole-fruit-versus-juice distinction matters more than most: orange juice strips out the fibre and pith (where much of the hesperidin concentrates) while concentrating the sugar into a quickly-absorbed liquid form. A whole orange and a glass of orange juice are meaningfully different foods for THE FAD's purposes, even though they start from the same fruit.

How to use it

Eating the whole fruit, including some of the white pith rather than removing every trace of it, captures more of the research-relevant compounds than juice alone. Oranges need no preparation beyond peeling — about as low-effort as healthy eating gets.
