Sleep and food might seem like separate pillars, but they're both governed by the same internal clock — your circadian rhythm — which makes meal timing one of the more interesting crossover signals in THE FAD model.

Your body runs on a schedule

Nearly every organ has its own circadian clock, synchronised by your central clock in the brain, which itself is set largely by light exposure. These clocks govern when your body is primed to digest food, regulate blood sugar, and run repair processes — and they expect a reasonably consistent daily rhythm.

Why "when" can matter alongside "what"

Research on time-restricted eating — compressing meals into a consistent window during your active hours rather than eating late into the night — has been associated with improved metabolic markers, independent of what's actually eaten. Eating very late, or at wildly inconsistent times day to day, appears to work against the body's expected rhythm.

A realistic starting point

This doesn't require an extreme fasting protocol. Simply keeping a consistent daily eating window and avoiding large meals in the last couple of hours before bed captures most of the practical benefit for most people.
